Penataran Temple: A Majestic Relic of East Java’s Hindu Heritage

Penataran Temple

Penataran Temple, located in Penataran Village, Nglegok District, sits on the southwestern slope of Mount Kelud, just north of Blitar and about 12 kilometers from the city center. It is the largest temple complex in East Java and a significant historical and cultural site.

Dating back to the Kediri Kingdom, Penataran Temple remained in use throughout the Majapahit Kingdom period. Its walls feature intricate reliefs, typical of East Javanese temples, depicting romanticized stories of important figures. Two notable reliefs at Penataran Temple depict scenes from the Ramayana, featuring Krishna and Rukmini, and from the Krisnayana, which tells the legendary story of Ken Arok and Ken Dedes.

The establishment of Penataran Temple as a tourist destination has greatly boosted the local economy. Numerous vendors offer souvenirs, making it easy for visitors to take home mementos of their trip. Additionally, the Blitar Regency Government has developed supporting amenities, such as swimming pools and baths, located conveniently near the temple to enhance the visitor experience.

Penataran Temple stands as a testament to the rich history and Hindu heritage of East Java, offering both cultural insight and recreational opportunities to all who visit.
