Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant: A Pioneering Dual-Mode Facility in Singapore
Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant – The Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant (KMEDP) stands as Singapore’s fourth desalination facility and the first of its kind in the country. This innovative plant operates on a dual-mode system, capable of either desalinating seawater or treating freshwater from the Marina Reservoir, depending on weather conditions. This unique flexibility ensures a steady supply of drinking water, regardless of changing environmental factors.
Sustainable Design and Community Integration
KMEDP showcases a forward-thinking design that maximizes land use efficiency. Its treatment facilities are located underground, allowing the plant to feature a green roof. This roof is seamlessly integrated with public open spaces, providing an inviting area for community activities and recreation, all while serving the essential function of water treatment.
Capacity and Operational Model
The plant is capable of producing 30 million gallons of clean drinking water daily, a critical contribution to Singapore’s water supply. KMEDP operates under a Design, Build, Own, and Operate (DBOO) model, reflecting its private-public partnership approach.
Long-Term Partnership with PUB
To secure the long-term supply of water, Keppel’s Infrastructure Division signed a 25-year Water Purchase Agreement with PUB. This agreement covers the design, construction, ownership, and operation of KMEDP, ensuring that Singapore’s national water agency receives a reliable source of clean drinking water for decades to come.
In summary, the Keppel Marina East Desalination Plant not only enhances Singapore’s water resilience but also exemplifies sustainable infrastructure that benefits both the environment and the community.
