History of the Kasongan Tourist Village

Before continuing the discussion about Kasongan Tourism Village, here we want to provide a little information about the history of Kasongan Tourism Village. It started with the death of a horse belonging to Dutch investigators in a rice field belonging to a resident in a village south of Yogyakarta City. Because the land owner was afraid that he would be punished by the Dutch who were colonizing at that time, the land owner relinquished his land ownership rights, followed by other residents who were also afraid of punishment.

A number of rice fields were finally recognized by residents of other villages. Residents who don’t have rice fields have finally started a new activity around their homes, namely processing clay which apparently doesn’t break when pressed for kitchen equipment and also for toys. In line with developments over time, clay handicrafts or better known as earthenware crafts have been developed to become more varied according to the needs and desires of the market.

In fact, craft items in Kasongan Village are not only clay/pottery items, but currently Kasongan residents have used other materials that are widely available in the surrounding environment, such as coconut shells, bamboo, rattan, wood, and others to process them into goods decoration that has a higher value. The skill of making pottery has been passed down from generation to generation, making Kasongan Village an icon of the pottery tourist village in Bantul Regency.
