Botorono Hill – Nestled in the foothills of Mount Sumbing, Botorono Hill is a small, serene hill located in Petarangan Village, Kledung District. The Origins of Botorono Hill
The history of Botorono Hill dates back to the time of the Majapahit Kingdom, during a period when the region was struck by a devastating plague. Mbah Brojo, a significant figure in the area, wandered across many places in search of a solution to the plague. After much searching, Mbah Brojo found a peaceful location at Botorono, where he performed rituals by arranging stones as part of his efforts to combat the epidemic.
According to local beliefs, Mbah Brojo lived to be around 800 years old. He had three descendants: Mbah Sakti, Mbah Brojo Suro, and Mbah Bromo. The stone arrangement on the western side of the hill is said to represent Mbah Brojo’s hermitage, as well as the legacy of his ancestors.
Sacred Stones and Cultural Significance
Botorono Hill is home to several sacred stone formations that are deeply rooted in local history and culture. In addition to Mbah Brojo’s legacy, the eastern side of the hill features a stone arrangement connected to another lineage—Mbah Bergolo, believed to have lived about 600 years ago. His descendants, Mbah Brahmo and Brahmo Wijoyo, are also honored with stone structures in this area.

Visitors are advised to refrain from sitting on the stones, urinating near them, or using inappropriate language in their vicinity, as these actions are considered disrespectful to the sacred site.
